April 11th 56 km
3 hours of sleep, 7 hours of transit makes for a very sleepy Kelsey. I could barely make it through dinner! The first half of the day was spent in a sleep deprived stupor, I’m amazed that I could hold on to my passport and make it to the gate, stupid 3:30am wake up call! Leaving Calgary in ankle deep snow and arriving in Santa Barbara in 20+ weather was spectacular. When we flew over San Francisco we could see Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge. I was thinking how cool the Escape From Alcatraz triathlon would be! After putting our bikes back together we zipped down into Solvang and it felt amazing to be back on the bike, with the wind in the hair and bugs in my teeth! We all joined back up and took a quick ride down to Nojoqui Falls. It was only 12km to the end of the road, I decided to join the boys in the rest of the loop. After a massive hill I was dropped and couldn’t see the group ahead of me or Andrew behind me. Having never ridden with these guy I didn’t know that in order to stay with the pack I had to hold on early! I finally hooked back up with Andrew and we decided with the sun setting and very little sleep to head into Lompoc and call it a day at 50km.
